The best jump leads for 2026

Jump leads are sold on an amp rating that no standard governs and bought on two facts the good ones publish: the conductor cross-section in mm² and whether that conductor is copper or copper-clad aluminum. A thick-looking cable can be mostly insulation, and aluminum carries roughly two-thirds of what copper carries for the same section. After that, the clamps: jaws that reach around a terminal, springs strong enough to hold, and insulation that does not crack in the cold — which is when they are used. Length is a trade, since every extra meter costs voltage. We compare stated section and material, length, clamp construction and cold flexibility.

What we recommend

  1. Einhell BT-BO 25/1 A jump leads with LED clamps

    Einhell BT-BO 25/1 A LED SP

The pair with lights in the clamps — which matters because a car that will not start is almost always a car that will not start at night.

Need by need, within jump leads

Reaching an awkwardly parked vehicle

Length decides whether two vehicles that cannot be brought nose to nose can be connected. That happens often in car parks.

IWH 075637

Getting the current through

The cable cross-section decides how much current actually gets through. Cables that are too thin get hot and will not crank a large engine.

IWH 075637

Who each family suits, across jump leads

Jump starting between vehicles
That is the whole purpose here, and it assumes a second vehicle is available. A self-contained jump starter does without one.
Diesel and large engines
The current needed is high. Thin cables become burning hot without passing enough to crank.
Recent vehicles
The onboard electronics impose connection precautions. The vehicle handbook comes before habit.

What you gain and what you give up, on jump leads

Cross-section against bulk
Heavy-gauge cables genuinely pass the current and are heavy and stiff, especially in cold weather. That is the price of effectiveness.
Length against voltage drop
Long cables let you position the vehicles and lose more voltage. The cross-section has to make up for the length.
Leads against a self-contained jump starter
Leads never go flat and assume a second vehicle; the jump starter is self-contained and has to be recharged. The two complement each other.

Frequent questions on jump leads

In what order do I connect the clamps?

Positive of the dead vehicle, positive of the donor, negative of the donor, then a metal earth point on the dead vehicle away from the battery. Never the last clamp on the negative terminal.

Why not put the last clamp on the battery?

The spark from the last connection would happen above a battery giving off hydrogen. It is the central precaution of the whole operation.

Are thin cables enough?

On a small petrol engine, sometimes. On a diesel they get hot without passing enough current to crank.

Should the donor vehicle be left running?

Leaving it running for a few minutes before cranking markedly improves the chances. Practices vary between manufacturers.

Can the electronics be damaged?

Reversing the polarity can destroy control modules. It is the most expensive mistake possible here.

In what order do I disconnect?

In the reverse order of connection, with the engine running. The last clamp removed is the first one connected.

What if the engine still will not crank?

Check the contacts, clean the terminals, persist less. A dead starter or battery is not fixed by repeated attempts.

Where does the negative clamp go?

On a metal earth point of the dead vehicle, away from the battery, not on its negative terminal. That keeps the spark away from the gases a battery can give off.

What stays with you, on jump leads

The last clamp goes on a metal earth point away from the battery: the final spark must never happen above the gases. Reversing the polarity destroys control modules, and cables that are too thin get hot without passing enough to crank a diesel.
