The best screw extractors for 2026

An extractor bites into a rounded or snapped fastener and turns it out, and the reason to choose carefully is that a broken extractor is harder to remove than the bolt was — the steel is deliberately hard, which also makes it brittle. Spiral flute extractors tighten their grip as they turn and suit softer, seized fasteners; straight flute designs spread the load and are less likely to expand the bolt against its thread. The most useful thing a set includes is not a tool at all: a drill size table, since the pilot hole decides everything. Several sets pair extractors with left-hand drill bits, which sometimes remove the bolt before the extractor is needed. We compare flute design, stated hardness, sizing guidance and bits.

  2. CAINCAY screw extractor set with magnetic bit holder

CAINCAY c-6 set with magnetic bit holder

Double-ended extractors: drill with one end, reverse the bit and extract with the other — which is what makes a set usable in one chuck.

    Material
HSS 4341 steel; chrome-vanadium adapter, stated
    Set
    6 extractors in 5 sizes — #0, #1, #2, #3, #4 — plus 1 adapter, stated
    Design
Double-ended: one end drills into the damaged screw, the other extracts, stated
    Holder
Magnetic bit holder and socket adapter, stated
    Amazon reference
    B0BYN6M67K
    EAN
    0662987935159
    • Double-ended design means one bit does both operations without swapping tools
    • A magnetic holder keeps the bit where you put it, which matters at an awkward angle
    • HSS 4341 is the softer of the two HSS grades in this hub

Best for: Rounded screw heads on interior and engine-bay fasteners.

    0659135841370
    • Publishes both the steel grade and the hardness in HRC — the only set here that does both
    • Drills included and matched to the extractors
    • Higher hardness means higher brittleness, which is a trade rather than a win

Best for: Broken and rounded fasteners up to M12, where a matched drill matters.

    • Extractor sockets work on the outside of a rounded head — no drilling required
    • Thirteen sizes covers most bolts and nuts on a car

Need by need, within screw extractors

Covering the common diameters

Each extractor corresponds to a range of diameters. A complete set avoids being stuck on one particular screw.

GEDORE 6759620

Getting a broken screw out

A single extractor is enough in the most common cases, for a fraction of the cost of workshop work.

YURINWOO 9PCS

Who each family suits, across screw extractors

Rounded screw
An extractor bites into the destroyed recess and allows it to be undone. It is the simplest and most frequent case.
Screw broken flush
A centered pilot hole has to be drilled, which is the delicate part. A center punch and a drill guide markedly improve the odds.
Extractor broken in the screw
Extractor steel is very hard and cannot be drilled. It is the situation that turns a problem into a big problem.

What you gain and what you give up, on screw extractors

Hard steel bites and snaps in the hole
An extractor is very hard so as to bite and snaps clean off if loaded askew. An extractor broken in the hole can no longer be drilled.
Extractor against drilling right through
The extractor preserves the thread if all goes well; drilling out and retapping takes longer and is safer on a badly seized screw.
Price against risk
A cheap extractor breaks more easily. On this job, the consequence of a break is out of all proportion to the saving.

Frequent questions on screw extractors

How do I drill on center?

A center punch mark at the exact center, then a fine drill before enlarging. An off-center hole damages the thread and complicates everything.

What if the extractor breaks in the screw?

It is the worst situation: its steel cannot be drilled with an ordinary bit. Spark erosion at a workshop often becomes the only way out.

Do I need penetrating fluid?

Applied in advance and left to work for several hours, it genuinely changes the odds. Heat also helps on parts that will take it.

Which way does an extractor turn?

Left, in the undoing direction: it is the reverse thread that bites as it turns. Some release as soon as tension is applied.

Can I weld a nut on instead?

On a protruding screw, welding a nut on is often more effective: the heat helps and the torque is applied on axis. That assumes a welder.

Do I need a drill guide?

It keeps the bit on axis, which is the main difficulty. A magnetic guide markedly improves the odds.

When should I give up?

Before breaking the extractor. Drilling right through and retapping remains possible as long as no hard steel is left in the hole.

Should you heat before extracting?

Heat expands the surrounding part and breaks the corrosion, which greatly improves the odds. It is out of the question near a tank, a seal or a wiring loom.

What stays with you, on screw extractors

An extractor broken in the hole cannot be drilled: that is what turns a problem into a big problem, and the reason to give up in time. Center punch, fine drill first, penetrating fluid left to work — and on a protruding screw, welding a nut on is often more effective.
