A verdict is only useful if you know what produced it. Here is ours.
Where a verdict comes from
Every verdict here is assembled in the same four steps, and each of them leaves something on the page you can check: we read the specifications, the manuals and the ratings that apply to the product, we weigh what long-term owners consistently report about it, and we name the source of every figure we publish.
That last rule is the one that does the work. A number with a source can be argued with; a number without one is decoration. Where a figure exists in a manual and contradicts the marketing, we quote the manual. Where no reliable figure exists at all, the page says so and leaves the field empty rather than filling it with something plausible.
What we weigh
We rank on the specifications that decide the job and the ones that decide how long it keeps doing it. In practice that means five things:
- The number that governs the product. The systems a scanner reaches rather than the number of codes in its database, the minimum saddle height behind a jack's tonnage, the part of its range where a torque wrench holds its stated accuracy, the duty cycle behind an inflator's headline pressure, the conductor cross-section behind a jump lead's amp rating. Where a maker publishes a headline figure without the one that qualifies it, we say so rather than repeating it.
- The thing that decides whether it stays in use. A jack light enough to drag out, a coupler that stays on the nipple, a lamp that still holds a charge in March, a case whose latches survive a winter in a boot. Every category has one detail that decides whether a tool is used monthly or pushed to the back of a shelf, and that is the one we describe.
- What is not in the box, and what is not free. The scanner update that becomes a subscription in year two, the adapter cap that does not fit your reservoir, the impact sockets an impact wrench needs and does not come with, the pads a polisher will get through. This is weighted more heavily here than on most sites, deliberately: a tool whose consumable is hard to find stops being a tool.
- Consumables and serviceability. What pads, plugs, tips, couplers and batteries cost over a few years; whether a battery platform is one you already own; whether a seal can be replaced rather than the whole unit. This is why a product that performs slightly worse sometimes outranks one that performs better.
- Availability where you are. Each reference is confirmed market by market, and the page says which markets carry a live offer. A tool nobody sells where you live is not a recommendation, whatever it is made of.
Where the evidence comes from
Three sources, weighted differently and always named. Manufacturer specifications and manuals, cited as such rather than repeated as fact — they are reliable for dimensions and unreliable for durability. Declared figures where they exist (a rated capacity, a torque accuracy, a cranking current, a working pressure), always flagged as a figure to verify on the current listing rather than a permanent guarantee. And the weight of long-term owner reports, which is the only practical source for the question that matters most: what is this like in year three, after a hundred cold starts, after the clamps have corroded, and after the case has been thrown in a boot a few hundred times?
Where a claim rests on one source rather than three, the page says so. Where we could not source a figure at all, the field is left empty and the gap is stated. We never fill one in by inference.
What the ordering means
We publish no scores. There is no number out of ten on this site, and there never has been — a single figure would have to compare a €600 diagnostic platform with a €12 test lamp, and it cannot. What we publish instead is an order: within a category, the sequence is deliberate, and the reasons for it are in the text.
Within a hub the order runs entry, mid, then top. A buyer arrives with a budget rather than with an ambition, and a page that opens on the dearest platform answers a question nobody asked.
The biases we designed against
Affiliate sites drift towards expensive products, towards whatever is newest, and towards whatever converts. Our defence is structural rather than a promise: no ranking on this site has ever been reordered because of what a product pays, several pages recommend a €15 accessory instead of a replacement tool, and no product has ever been placed in exchange for anything.
There is a bias specific to this subject, and it is worth naming. Breakdown stories sell tools. A page that opens with a car that would not start on a cold morning tends to close by recommending the largest jump starter on it. No page here opens that way. Where the honest answer is that a tool changes very little — a second socket set, a larger jack than the car needs, a scanner whose extra systems your car does not have — the page says so.
The one bias we cannot remove is availability. We cover what is genuinely purchasable across Amazon's US, UK, German, French, Italian and Spanish stores, which means excellent tools sold only by trade suppliers and specialist distributors are under-represented here. Where that matters to the recommendation, the page says so.
A published figure is reported, never computed
Garage tools are sold on numbers, and those numbers are the easiest thing on a listing to repeat carelessly. The rule that governs every page that touches them: every rated capacity, stated torque accuracy, cranking or peak current, working pressure, duty cycle and battery capacity on this site is reported from the manufacturer's own documentation, with its source named, and never calculated or inferred by us. Where a figure is not published, the page says it is not published rather than offering a plausible one.
Where a maker rates a jack at 3 t under EN 1494 or a wrench at ±4 % of reading, we report that the manufacturer states it and link to what they publish. We are not a testing laboratory, so nothing here should be read as a measurement of our own — and no product on this site is described as lifting more safely or tightening more accurately than another on the strength of a specification alone.
What these tools actually do
One sentence governs the whole site, and it is the reason several pages here read less enthusiastically than their competitors: a scanner reports, a jack lifts, a wrench repeats a number, and none of them supplies a diagnosis. A fault code names a symptom; what caused it is still an open question when the code is on the screen. We write it that way because the alternative — implying that tools diagnose — sells more equipment and leaves a reader with a car in pieces.
Where this site stops
Nothing here replaces the vehicle's own workshop manual. Brakes, steering and suspension hold a car together at speed: for jacking points, tightening torques, fluid specifications and bleeding sequences, the page points at the manual rather than paraphrasing it, even though a page that stops earns nothing.
And the one safety statement we repeat rather than assume: a jack lifts a car and axle stands hold it. No page here describes working under a vehicle supported by a jack alone. Pages that touch that boundary say it in the text rather than in a disclaimer at the bottom.
Questions people actually ask
Do you accept payment for reviews or placement?
No. We have never accepted payment, free product or any other consideration in exchange for a position in a ranking. If that ever changes it will be stated on the page itself, not in a footer.
What is a verdict on this site based on?
Manufacturer specifications, manuals and the figures a maker declares, weighed against what long-term owners consistently report — and each page names which of those a given figure came from. That is why a rated capacity or a stated torque accuracy appears here as a stated figure, rather than as a claim about how safely something lifts or how precisely it tightens.
Why does a cheap product sometimes outrank an expensive one?
Because we score against what a product is for, not against its price. A €15 locking grease coupler makes an unusable grease gun usable, and nothing else does it as cheaply — so it scores accordingly.
Do you ever recommend not buying anything?
Yes. Several problems on this site are solved by cleaning a battery terminal, by checking tyre pressures cold against the door placard, or by reading the jacking points in the handbook — rather than by a purchase, and we say so on the page even though it earns nothing.
Do you publish tightening torques?
No. Torque values belong to the manufacturer of the vehicle, per fastener, and are published in its own documentation. A torque wrench repeats a number accurately; it is not our place to supply the number. Pages that touch the subject explain that and point at the manual.
