The best polishing pads for 2026

Pads are the consumable that decides what a polisher does. Foam is graded by density rather than by color — although every brand uses color, and no two brands agree on it — running from cutting through polishing to soft finishing foam. Microfibre and wool pads cut faster and finish rougher, which suits hard clear coats. Two mechanical details matter more than the grade: the pad must be slightly larger than the backing plate so the edge does not catch, and the hook-and-loop face has to hold under heat. Who each family suits, across polishing pads

Cutting: A firm pad works with the abrasive compound and corrects defects. It heats more and is less controllable.
Finishing: A soft pad applies a fine polish and removes the marks left by cutting. The two steps are distinct.
Deep defects: Wool pads cut markedly more and leave marks to be refined. That is heavy correction work.

What you gain and what you give up, on polishing pads

Firmness against heat: A firm pad corrects faster and heats more. On an edge, that translates into clearcoat burned through.
Foam against wool: Wool cuts a great deal more and leaves micro-scratches to be refined in finishing. It is not a single step.
Diameter against following curves: A large pad covers ground quickly and skips over curved surfaces. A small one follows them and takes longer.

Frequent questions on polishing pads

Do I need one pad per product?

Yes: mixing a cutting abrasive and a finishing polish on the same pad makes finishing impossible. One pad per step.

How do I clean a pad while working?

By brushing it with the machine spinning, or with compressed air. A saturated pad stops cutting and loads the surface.

How much product should I apply?

A few dots on the pad, spread with the machine off before starting. Too much product lubricates without correcting and sprays everywhere.

When should a pad be replaced?

When it tears, comes away from the hook-and-loop, or stays deformed. A tired pad works unevenly.

Can pads be washed?

In lukewarm soapy water, squeezed without twisting, dried flat. A badly dried pad comes away from its backing.

Should the pad overhang the plate?

Slightly, to protect the plate from contact with the bodywork. Overhanging too much, it tears at the edge.

Should I start with the most aggressive pad?

On the contrary: start with the least aggressive combination that corrects, and only step up if necessary. That is the principle of polishing.

Can a polishing pad be washed?

Yes, in lukewarm water with no harsh detergent, then dried flat without wringing. A pad dried screwed up keeps its deformation and vibrates on the backing plate.

What stays with you, on polishing pads

One pad per step, never mixed: a cutting abrasive makes finishing impossible. Start with the least aggressive combination that corrects, a few dots of product spread with the machine off — and clean the pad while working, saturated it stops cutting.
