What lands on the bench

Three-meter jump leads with 16 mm (0.63 in)² copper-coated aluminum conductors, stated for 6, 12 and 24 V systems.

Reading the two numbers together

Sixteen square millimeters over three meters is a modest specification. It suits a small petrol engine and it will struggle with a cold diesel — which is exactly what the heavier leads in this hub exist for.

Where the compactness wins

In the car. A pair of leads in a garage helps nobody at the roadside, and a set small enough to keep in a door pocket is a set that is present when needed.

The 24 V note

Stated, and useful if a van or a truck is ever the donor vehicle.

The questions that reach us

Is 3 m (10 ft) long enough?

Only if the cars can be parked front to front. In a car park where the flat car is boxed in, 4.5 m is the difference between jump-starting it and pushing it.

What is copper-coated aluminum?

An aluminum conductor with a copper surface layer. It conducts less well than solid copper for the same section and better than bare aluminum at the terminations, which is where corrosion starts.
