A fault code names a symptom, never a cause
Every petrol car sold in the European Union since 2001, and every diesel since 2004, carries the same 16-pin EOBD socket — so reading an engine code is not what separates these tools. What separates them is everything past the engine: ABS, airbag, transmission and body modules, live data streams, and service functions such as an oil-service reset or retracting an electronic parking brake. The second dividing line is invisible at purchase: the update policy. Several ranges include one year of updates and charge a subscription afterwards, which decides how long the tool follows the car park.
