What lands on the bench

A four-stage headlight restoration kit: cleaning, wet sanding in graded papers, polishing and a UV coating, with sponge and cloth.

The stage that is usually missing

Cleaning. Every kit assumes it and few include it. Sanding a dirty lens grinds road grit into polycarbonate, and the marks it leaves take an extra grit to remove.

The stage that matters most

The UV coating. It replaces the factory layer whose failure caused the yellowing, and it is the difference between a repair that lasts a season and one that lasts years.

The part that needs patience

Cure time. Follow the instruction on the bottle, and keep the car dry until it has passed.

The questions that reach us

Why clean before sanding?

Because a lens carries road film and grit, and the first pass of abrasive drags all of it across the surface. Cleaning first is a two-minute step that prevents deep scratches.

How long does UV coating take to cure?

It depends on the product, and the instructions state it. Rain or washing before it has cured is what ruins an otherwise good restoration.
