  • A voltage reading as well as a light — enough to spot a volt drop that a lamp would not show
  • A flexible probe reaches where a rigid needle cannot
  • A digital tester draws very little current, so it does not load the circuit the way a lamp does

Best for: Chasing a voltage drop, where the number matters and not just the light.

What lands on the bench

A digital test pen reading 3 to 24 V, with an LED display, a test light, a flexible spring probe and a crocodile clip.

The advantage of a number

Eleven volts and twelve volts light the same lamp. On a starter circuit, that difference is the fault. A display turns a yes-or-no tool into a measurement.

The trade-off

A digital tester draws almost nothing, so it will happily read 12 V on a wire that cannot carry current. That is the case a plain lamp catches — which is why owning both is the sensible answer.

The circuits to stay off

Airbag and network wiring, as with every tester in this hub.

The questions that reach us

Lamp or digital?

A lamp loads the circuit and proves it can carry current; a digital tester shows the actual voltage. Both are useful, and the honest answer is that a garage ends up owning one of each.

What is a voltage drop?

The difference between what a circuit should have and what arrives, caused by resistance in a corroded connection. It is invisible to a test lamp and obvious to a display.
