Why matched drills matter

The pilot hole size decides everything. Drills supplied with the extractors are already the right diameter for each one, which removes the most common cause of a failed extraction.

The left-hand trick

A left-hand drill turns counterclockwise. On a fastener that is merely tight rather than seized, the drilling itself often unscrews it — and the extractor never comes out of the box.

What is a left-hand drill for?

It cuts while turning counterclockwise, which is the direction the fastener needs to move. Quite often the drill itself backs the screw out before the extractor is needed at all.

Does higher hardness help?

It grips harder and snaps more readily. HRC 63–65 is a genuine specification and it raises the cost of a mistake — which is an argument for going slowly rather than for choosing softer steel.
