What’s in the box

Five GEDORE screw extractors in chrome-vanadium steel at a stated 54 HRC, sized for M3 to M18 screws, in a clear plastic storage box. The listing gives a net weight of 117 g (4.1 oz) and the reference 8551-55, GEDORE article number 6759620. There are no drill bits and no holder in the box.

The hardness, in context

Of the screw extractor sets on this shelf that publish a hardness, the range runs from 50–55 HRC (VEVOR) to 63–65 HRC (YURINWOO). GEDORE’s 54 sits at the soft end.

That is a trade, not a ranking. Harder steel bites a hardened or rusted fastener better, but it is more brittle, and an extractor that snaps inside a screw is harder to remove than the screw was. Softer steel is more likely to deform or wear first. GEDORE does not say which way it chose; it publishes the number, which is more than several sets here do.

What you need to add

A holder or tap wrench. The listing recommends GEDORE’s 8551 TG ratcheting holder, sold separately. Any tap wrench that fits the extractor’s square shank will also turn it.

A drill bit for the pilot hole. Drill a centered hole in the broken screw, then tap the extractor in and turn it counterclockwise. Go slowly: the extractor wedges tighter as you turn.

Where this set fits

On a broken screw or small bolt where you want a compact set from an established German tool maker and already own a tap wrench. If you also need drill bits and a holder in the box, a full kit from the screw extractors hub will cost less to get started.

The questions that reach us

Is 54 HRC too soft for a screw extractor?

It is softer than the 58–65 HRC sets on this shelf. As a general rule, harder tool steel bites better but is more brittle, and softer steel is more likely to deform or wear than to snap. GEDORE publishes the figure without saying which way it leaned, so read 54 HRC as a fact about the steel, not as a promise that it cannot break.

What do I need to turn these extractors?

A tap wrench or a holder. GEDORE's listing recommends its own 8551 TG ratcheting holder, sold separately. Budget for one if your toolbox does not already have a tap wrench.

Will a metric set work on SAE (inch) screws?

Yes. An extractor grips the hole you drill in the broken screw, not its thread, so what matters is the screw's diameter. M3 to M18 covers roughly 1/8 in to 11/16 in screws.

Are drill bits included?

No. The box holds the five extractors only. You will need a drill bit for the pilot hole in each broken screw.
