Temperature compensation. Correct charging voltage depends on temperature, and a charger that ignores it will either undercharge a battery in a cold garage or overcharge it in a warm one. It is the difference between a battery that lasts its design life and one that quietly does not.

Charging voltage should vary with temperature: the same setting that fills a battery correctly at 20 °C undercharges it at 0 °C. A charger that measures ambient temperature and adjusts is doing the one thing most chargers ignore.
