Temperature compensation. Correct charging voltage depends on temperature, and a charger that ignores it will either undercharge a battery in a cold garage or overcharge it in a warm one. It is the difference between a battery that lasts its design life and one that quietly does not.

Charging voltage should vary with temperature: the same setting that fills a battery correctly at 20 °C (68 °F) undercharges it at 0 °C (32 °F). A charger that measures ambient temperature and adjusts is doing the one thing most chargers ignore.
It is a named, documented reconditioning stage rather than an unspecified pulse. CTEK describes what it is for — batteries in poor condition or deeply discharged — which is more than most makers publish.
