TOPDON CarPal-A Bluetooth scanner with app review
A Bluetooth box driven by its app rather than a screen, sold on two things a plain reader does not have: a scan across vehicle systems and six of the common service resets.
The bottom line The point where a reader becomes a tool: it resets things, not just reads them.
What lands on the bench
A Bluetooth interface and an app. There is no screen on the device — the phone is the display, and that is the whole design.
What it adds over a plain reader
Service resets. Six of the common ones, which is what turns a diagnostic tool into a maintenance tool: oil-service counters, and the resets that follow ordinary jobs. System coverage beyond the engine, which is where a large share of warning lights actually originate.
The battery function
Voltage monitoring in real time, tracked over use. It will not replace a proper conductance tester, and it will tell you whether the charging system is doing anything at all — which is often the question.
What is not published
The terms of the app: whether every function stays free, and for how long. On any app-driven tool that is the figure that decides ownership cost, and its absence from a listing is worth noting rather than assuming.

Questions people actually ask
Is this a dongle or a scanner?
Physically a dongle; functionally the maker sells it as a full-vehicle scan tool with six reset services. We list it with the scanners because that is what its published capability describes, and because it does far more than a plain adapter.
What is AutoVIN?
The tool reads the vehicle identification number from the car and selects the right vehicle profile automatically, instead of asking you to pick make, model and year. It removes the most common source of a failed connection.
Engine system only · 2.8-inch colour screen · live data · battery test · 8 languages
The cheapest way to stop guessing at a warning light: engine codes, freeze frame and live data on a colour screen, with a battery voltage test thrown in — and no access to ABS or airbag, which the maker states plainly.
Best for: A first reader for a household that wants to know what the light means before phoning a garage.
Engine system · LCD screen · full OBDII protocol set stated · plug and play
A plain, plug-and-play engine code reader whose selling point is protocol completeness — the maker names the protocols explicitly, which several tools at this price do not.
Best for: Someone who wants a reader in the glovebox that needs no phone, no app and no account.
The tool where the update policy is the headline: LAUNCH states lifetime free updates on a four-system scanner with a touchscreen and seven service resets.
Best for: Someone who works on several cars, or on one car with an ABS light.
