The tool that gets used most

The valve core tool. A slow puncture is often a leaking valve core rather than a hole in the tread, and replacing one is a two-minute job with this and impossible without it.

The plug repair, described honestly

Ream the hole, insert a plugged string, trim it. It holds pressure and it is a temporary repair — that is the manufacturer’s position across the whole category, not a caution added here.

What is off limits

The sidewall and the shoulder. A tire injured there is a tire to replace.

What is a valve core tool for?

Removing the valve core to deflate a tire quickly, and refitting it without cross-threading. It is also the tool for replacing a leaking core, which is a surprisingly common slow puncture.

Where may a plug be used?

In the tread area only, within the limits tire manufacturers publish — never the sidewall or shoulder. And it remains a temporary repair until a fitter has inspected the tire from inside.
