What lands on the bench

A 78-piece heavy-duty tire repair kit with a wrench, an insertion tool, a full set of consumables and instructions.

Where the extra pieces go

Consumables. The tool count in every kit here is roughly the same — a reamer, an insertion needle, a knife — and the difference is how many plugs, strips and how much cement come with them.

Who that suits

Anyone with more than a car: a trailer, a caravan, a ride-on mower with tubeless tires. Those are the vehicles that pick up punctures and that nobody rushes to a fitter.

The rule that does not change with size

Tread only, temporary, and have the tire inspected from inside afterwards.

The questions that reach us

Do plugs have a shelf life?

The rubber strings and the cement do. A kit that lives in a hot boot for five years is not the kit it was — which is an argument for a larger kit used occasionally rather than a small one used once.

Is a bigger kit better?

Only in consumables. The tools are the same three or four in every kit here, and piece counts are driven by how many plugs and patches are included.
