KS Tools 917.0779 Evolution 179-piece review

The trade set: 179 pieces, six-point sockets throughout, and a named socket profile designed to drive on the flats rather than the corners.

The last word The geometry is what you are paying for. On a seized fastener it is the difference between undone and rounded.

What lands on the bench

A 179-piece Evolution set in chrome-vanadium, six-point throughout, with a named FlankTraction socket profile and a matt satin finish.

Why six-point matters more than the piece count

A twelve-point socket engages the corners of a fastener; a six-point socket engages the flats. On a bolt that has been on a car for ten winters, the corners are the part that gives way, and the profile is what decides whether it does.

The finish is not cosmetic

Matt satin rather than mirror chrome. Polished chrome looks better in a photograph and shows every fingerprint; a satin finish is what workshop tools use because it stays legible and grips slightly better with an oily hand.

What a catalog number buys

Individual replacement. Losing a 13 mm (0.51 in) socket from a trade set means ordering a 13 mm (0.51 in) socket; losing it from a consumer set often means the set is now incomplete forever.

What it does, and what it misses

Strengths

  • Six-point throughout: it grips the flats and rounds a tired fastener far less readily than twelve-point
  • A named drive profile rather than a generic hex — the geometry is a design decision, not an accident
  • A trade catalog number, so individual sockets can be replaced years later

Compromises

  • The most expensive set here by a distance
  • No tooth count published, even at this price
  • 179 pieces is more than most home garages will ever use

The questions that reach us

What is a flank-drive profile?

A socket shape that contacts the flats of a fastener rather than its corners. Corners are where a fastener rounds, so moving the contact inboard is the single most effective way to avoid ruining a tight bolt.

Six-point or twelve-point?

Six-point grips better and is the default for anything tight or corroded. Twelve-point exists because it engages every 30° instead of every 60°, which matters where there is no room to reposition the socket.
