Everyone plans for the catching and nobody plans for the pouring. A pan without a spout has to be tipped from a corner, and used oil runs down the outside of it onto whatever is underneath.
More than your engine holds. Eight liters covers most cars comfortably, including the filter’s contents.
Pour into a sealed container and take it to a collection point. That transfer is the step to do carefully, and a spout is what makes it survivable.

More than the engine holds, plus what the filter releases. Check the oil capacity in your handbook and add a margin — an overflowing pan under a car is the worst outcome of the whole job.
The shape reduces the bounce as a stream hits the base. It is not magic, and it is noticeably better than a flat-bottomed tub when the plug first comes out.
