BGS 9474 drain tray, 18 l review

The big one: 18 liters in a 565 by 420 mm (16.5 in) tray, for jobs where a car-sized pan would overflow.

The last word Capacity and footprint. Nothing else, and sometimes that is the whole requirement.

What lands on the bench

An 18 liter drain tray measuring 565 by 420 mm (16.5 in), stated for oil and coolant.

Where the size earns its place

Coolant. A cooling system holds far more than a sump, it comes out under gravity from an awkward angle, and there is no plug to aim. A large tray is the only thing that keeps it off the floor.

What it does not have

A spout, a scale or a filter rest. It is a tray, and the trade for that simplicity is capacity.

The practical pairing

A large tray for catching, a sealed container for carrying. Between them the job stays clean.

What it does, and what it misses

Strengths

  • 18 liters means it will not overflow on anything a home garage drains
  • A large footprint catches what misses the plug — which on a hot engine is most of the first second
  • Explicitly stated for coolant as well as oil

Compromises

  • Large enough to be awkward to store and to carry when full
  • Low walls relative to area, so it must be moved level
  • No spout, scale or filter rest published

The questions that reach us

Why does the footprint matter?

Because the first second of a drain plug coming out is unpredictable — the stream arcs, and a small pan catches the middle of it. A 565 mm (22.2 in) tray catches the whole arc.

Can I use the same tray for coolant and oil?

The maker states both. In practice keeping them separate is better: coolant should go to a collection point uncontaminated, and old oil should not be diluted.
