What lands on the bench

A rechargeable hand lamp stated at 200 lumens with up to twelve hours of runtime, five modes and an integrated 450 mAh lithium-polymer battery.

Reading the two numbers together

Lumens without runtime, or runtime without lumens, tells you nothing. Both published lets you place the lamp: modest output, long life, which is exactly right for close work.

Where the runtime figure comes from

The lowest mode. That is standard practice across the category, and it means the useful figure — on the setting you will actually use — is somewhere in between.

What is still missing

Color rendering. It is the specification that decides whether wire colors look like themselves, and almost nobody publishes it.

The questions that reach us

Is 200 lumens enough?

For close work under a bonnet, comfortably. Lumen counts on cheap lamps are often optimistic; a modest, published figure from a known brand is worth more than a large unpublished one.

What does the runtime figure assume?

The lowest mode, as with every published runtime. That is normal, and it is why five modes matter — the useful runtime is somewhere between the extremes.
