FreeTec petrol compression tester review

The kit that publishes its thread pitches as well as its diameters — the specification that decides whether an adapter actually seals in your head.

The last word Bought on its thread pitches. That is a strange reason and the right one.

What lands on the bench

A 0–20 bar gauge, a hose and four threaded adapters with their pitches stated.

Why that detail is the review

Half the frustration with compression kits is an adapter that will not seal, and the reason is almost always a pitch mismatch rather than a diameter one. FreeTec publishes M10 × 1.0, M12 × 1.25, M14 × 1.25 and M18 × 1.5, which lets you check your engine before buying rather than after.

What the maker says it finds

Wear and leakage at rings and valves. That is the correct description: compression testing finds sealing loss, and further tests locate it.

What the vehicle list is worth

Nothing, technically — a list of makes in a listing is marketing. The thread specification above is the compatibility statement that counts.

Availability

Not found on the American Amazon store, where the buy link falls back to a local search rather than to a page that does not exist.

Prices and availability are what Keepa reported on the date this page was updated; both move.

What it does, and what it misses

Strengths

  • Thread pitches published, not just diameters — the detail that decides whether it seals
  • States what the test is for: ring and valve wear
  • Bar rather than kg/cm² on the metric scale

Compromises

  • Petrol only
  • No stated accuracy
  • The list of vehicle makes in the listing is illustrative, not a compatibility guarantee

The questions that reach us

Why does thread pitch matter?

M14 exists in more than one pitch, and an adapter with the wrong one will either not start or will damage the plug thread in an aluminum head. A kit that publishes pitches lets you check before ordering.

Does a low reading mean the engine is finished?

It means one cylinder is sealing worse than the others. A wet test — a little oil in the cylinder, repeated — separates rings from valves, and the engine manual describes both.
