The last word The tool for a tight metal filter — and it says so, including what it will break.
What lands on the bench
Adjustable filter pliers, 30 cm (11.8 in) long, for metal spin-on filters between 60 and 102 mm (4.02 in) in diameter.
The warning in the listing
“Not for plastic or rubber filters.” That single sentence prevents the most expensive mistake in this family: cracking a cartridge housing that then has to be replaced along with the oil you just drained.
Where pliers beat a strap
In a confined space. Pliers apply force across the filter and need only enough room for the handles; a strap needs an arc.
What to check on your own car
Whether your filter is a metal spin-on or a plastic cartridge housing. The two need different tools, and the difference is visible at a glance.

What it does, and what it misses
Strengths
The listing states what it must not be used on, which is rare and useful
A published diameter range, so fit can be checked before ordering
Pliers work where a strap has no swing room, because the force is applied across rather than around
Compromises
Metal filters only — a genuine limitation on modern cars with cartridge housings
Toothed jaws mark the filter, which matters only if you meant to keep it
30 cm (11.8 in) still needs some room

The questions that reach us
Why can it not be used on plastic housings?
Because toothed jaws concentrate force on two points, and a plastic cartridge housing cracks. Those housings have flats or a hex molded in, and they need a matched cup wrench.
Pliers or strap?
Pliers grip harder and need less room; a strap spreads its force and fits more sizes. Most home garages end up with both, and each costs very little.
