The last word Three euros for the tool that turns an oil change from impossible into routine.
What lands on the bench
A strap wrench with a non-slip PVC band and a long handle, adjustable across filter diameters.
Why a strap is the right first purchase
It fits everything. A cup wrench fits one diameter and one flute count and is perfect when it matches; a strap works on whatever your car has, which matters when you have not yet learned what that is.
The limitation to check first
Swing room. A strap wrench needs an arc, and on some engines the filter sits where an arc does not exist. Look at the filter before ordering.
The one exception
Plastic cartridge housings. Those crack under a strap and need a matched cup wrench — that is a manufacturer’s instruction, not a preference.

What it does, and what it misses
Strengths
Fits almost any spin-on filter, which no cup wrench can claim
The band spreads its grip, so it does not crush a filter housing before it turns it
Costs less than the washer you will replace at the same time
Compromises
Needs room to swing — useless on a filter buried against a subframe
Not suitable for plastic cartridge housings, which need a matched cup
A PVC band eventually stretches and slips

The questions that reach us
Strap, cup or claw?
A cup fits one diameter and drives from a ratchet, which is the only correct answer for a plastic cartridge housing. A strap fits everything and needs swing room. A claw works where nothing else fits and marks the filter, which does not matter on a part being discarded.
Will it undo a filter someone over-tightened?
Often, because a long handle gives leverage. If the band slips repeatedly, the filter housing has probably deformed — and that is where a claw or a screwdriver through the filter becomes the last resort.
