ATPEAM MacPherson compressor, 300 mm (11.8 in) review

A MacPherson compressor with both a mass and a force rating published — 1050 kg (2314.9 lb) and 10,200 N, which is unusually complete.

The last word Two units for the same rating, and a 300 mm (11.8 in) span. Clear enough to check before starting.

What lands on the bench

A MacPherson strut spring compressor with a 300 mm (11.8 in) span, rated at 1050 kg (2314.9 lb) or 10,200 N.

The rating, and why it is written twice

Newtons are what a compressed spring actually pushes with; kilograms are what most people compare. Publishing both is a small courtesy that makes the number checkable.

What is not described

The claw design. On a tool whose only failure mode is a claw leaving a coil, that is the description worth having, and it is absent here.

The rule, once more

Wind by hand, evenly, both sides, claws seated, nobody in line. And the workshop manual for the car governs the rest.

What it does, and what it misses

Strengths

  • Publishes the rating in both kilograms and newtons
  • 300 mm (11.8 in) covers common passenger car springs
  • Stated for fitting as well as removal, which are different loads

Compromises

  • Lower rated load than the alternative here
  • No claw design described
  • External clamps, with the usual caveats

The questions that reach us

Why publish both kg and N?

Because force is what a spring exerts and mass is what people compare. Ten thousand two hundred newtons is roughly 1050 kilograms-force, and quoting both removes the ambiguity.

Does span or rating matter more?

Both, and neither can be substituted. The span has to fit the spring; the rating has to exceed what the spring exerts when compressed. The vehicle documentation gives the spring; the tool gives the rest.
