MAGSEN 1200 N·m, three stages, five sockets review

The only tool here publishing a torque and an rpm for every stage, and the heaviest at 10 lb.

The last word Its three stages are fully specified, which nothing else here manages. Then read the 10 lb and the 16-inch body against what this tool is held up to do.

What you are getting

A 1/2-inch square-drive brushless cordless wrench at 21 V, stating 900 ft-lb / 1200 N·m maximum torque and 3800 rpm, with three stages published as 1800 rpm / 500 N·m, 2800 / 800 and 3800 / 1200; a tungsten steel anvil, an alloy steel hammer head, a double-layer ABS housing, a cooling fan, a smart auto-stop, a 10-second auto-shutoff, a reverse brake stop, and protection against over-current, over-voltage, overheating and short circuits. Two 4000 mAh batteries, a charger to 70% in 30 minutes, five impact sockets (17, 19, 21, 22, 24 mm (0.94 in)), an extension rod and an ABS case. A 16-inch body at 10 lb. $99.99.

It is the only tool here that specifies its stages completely

“Speed 1: 1,800 RPM / 500 N·m, suitable for precision work; Speed 2: 2,800 RPM / 800 N·m, suitable for standard bolts; Speed 3: 3,800 RPM / 1,200 N·m, suitable for hard-to-tighten nuts.”

A torque and a speed for each of three settings. On this shelf that is unique:

ToolStagesTorque per stageRpm per stage

DCA ADPB5204350 / 420 / 520 + 682—
Dong Cheng, published3431 and 507 among them—
Robustrue3—2000 / 2200 / 2800
DEWALT4——

The published Dong Cheng page states the principle: publishing the torque of the stages “is what makes a selector usable”. This publishes both halves, so a buyer can see that stage 2 at 800 N·m matches the entire output of the Robustrue tool on this shelf.

But it is more than twice the weight of the tools either side of it

“The compact 16-inch body weighs just 10 lbs and features a TPE non-slip grip… even beginners can enjoy effortless, fatigue-free one-handed operation during extended use.”

The introduction puts weight third among its criteria, and gives the reason: “this is held at arm’s length under a wing.”

ToolStated weightStated length
Robustrue3.74 lb (1.70 kg)5.9 in
DCA ADPB5204.4 lb (2.0 kg)6 in
Dong Cheng, published2.2 kg (4.9 lb)—
This tool10 lb (4.5 kg)16 in

Ten pounds is 4.5 kg, which is 2.6 times the Robustrue figure, and 16 inches is nearly three times its length. Those two numbers are published in the same sentence as the words “compact” and “effortless, fatigue-free one-handed operation”, and the sentence does not survive them. Held at arm’s length over a wheel arch, 4.5 kg at 400 mm is a different tool from 1.7 kg at 150 mm.

It is the right size for what the bullets also describe — “construction sites, machinery, or scaffolding”, standing on the ground with the work in front of you. It is the wrong size for a subframe bolt above your head.

And its auto-stop is presented as a solution to over-tightening, which it is not

“The smart auto-stop function eliminates the risk of over-tightening damage.” And: “can install car and truck wheel bolts in just 3 seconds.”

The rule at the top of this shelf: “an impact gun loosens wheel bolts, and a torque wrench finishes them.”

An auto-stop is a cut-out: it stops the motor when resistance reaches a threshold the tool decides. That is not a calibrated torque, there is no figure published for it on any of the three stages beyond the stage maximum, and it is not adjustable to a vehicle’s specification. “Eliminates the risk” is a stronger word than the mechanism supports.

Compare how the DEWALT tool on this shelf words the same function: “designed to help prevent overtightening and fastener run-off” — a hedge, and an honest one. And the published Bosch wrench offers “automatic slow-down”, which is a description of behavior rather than a guarantee.

Three seconds to install a wheel bolt is also true and beside the point. The bolt still has to be checked with a torque wrench afterwards, and this site has a torque wrenches shelf for that.

The four percentage claims are unverifiable

“It is 90% more efficient than a manual wrench while reducing physical exertion by 80%.” And: “two 4000mAh battery packs (providing 200% longer runtime).” And: the charger reaches “70% capacity in just 30 minutes”.

The last is a specification: a stated charge level at a stated time, which can be checked against a clock. The other three are not — no method, no comparison tool, no baseline. “200% longer runtime” is measured against an unnamed battery, presumably a 2.0 Ah pack, which the Robustrue listing on this shelf states explicitly (“in contrast to 2.0 Ah batteries, the runtime is increased by 50%”).

None of that makes the tool worse. It means the numbers to compare on are the ones above: 1,200 N·m, three specified stages, 4.5 kg (9.9 lb), 16 inches.

Five impact sockets, which is the most on this shelf

“5 heavy-duty, wear-resistant sockets (17/19/21/22/24mm) to handle 95% of automotive and industrial bolts” — and the contents list calls them “5x Impact Wrench Sockets”.

The buying advice for this shelf: “use impact sockets, not chrome ones. Chrome sockets are hardened to resist wear, not shock, and they fail by shattering rather than by deforming.”

Two tools here supply any: this with five and Robustrue with four. The extra size is 22 mm (0.87 in), and an extension rod comes with it, which is what reaches a recessed wheel nut inside an alloy.

A tungsten anvil and a cooling fan, both published

“heavy-duty tungsten steel anvil, an alloy steel hammer head, and a military-grade double-layer ABS housing.” And: “a built-in cooling fan for optimal temperature control.”

The anvil is the shaft the socket sits on and the part that takes every blow; naming its material is more than most listings do, though no anvil retention type is published — the DEWALT and DCA tools both state a hog ring.

A cooling fan is the honest answer to the problem a 10-second auto-shutoff also addresses: a brushless motor at 3,800 rpm under load makes heat, and nothing else on this shelf publishes either feature. “Military-grade” is not a grade.

What is not published

No fastening or breakaway split — “maximum torque” covers both, which the introduction calls the common mistake on this shelf. No impacts per minute. No anvil retention type. No voltage consistency: the title says 21 V, which is the peak cell voltage of a pack usually sold as 20 V. No platform range — what else takes this battery is not stated. No auto-stop threshold. No warranty term; what is offered is “100% customer service”.

At $99.99 it specifies its three stages better than anything on this shelf and weighs two and a half times what the lightest tool here weighs.

What it does, and what it misses

Strengths

  • The only tool here publishing both a torque and an rpm for every stage
  • Five impact sockets and an extension rod, the fullest set on this shelf
  • A cooling fan and a 10-second shutoff, neither published by anything else here
  • A charger that states 70% in 30 minutes, which is a checkable figure

Compromises

  • 10 lb and a 16-inch body, described in the same sentence as "compact"
  • Its auto-stop is said to eliminate over-tightening, which a cut-out cannot
  • One "maximum torque" figure, without saying fastening or breakaway
  • Three percentage claims with no method behind them

The questions that reach us

Does the auto-stop mean I can tighten wheel bolts with it?

No. An auto-stop is a cut-out at a resistance the tool decides, not a calibrated torque — there is no figure published for it, and nothing to set to a vehicle’s specification. MAGSEN says it "eliminates the risk of over-tightening damage"; the DEWALT tool on this shelf words the same function as "designed to help prevent" it, which is the honest version. The shelf’s rule holds: "an impact gun loosens wheel bolts, and a torque wrench finishes them."

Is 10 lb a problem?

It depends where the work is. Ten pounds is 4.5 kg (9.9 lb) on a 16-inch body, which is 2.6 times the weight and nearly three times the length of the Robustrue tool on this shelf — and the introduction puts weight third among its criteria "because this is held at arm’s length under a wing". On the ground, at scaffolding or machinery, it is the right tool. Overhead, it is not.

What makes its stage figures better than the others?

They are complete. MAGSEN publishes a torque and an rpm for each of three settings — 500 N·m at 1,800 rpm, 800 at 2,800, 1,200 at 3,800. On this shelf, DCA publishes torques without rpm, Robustrue publishes rpm without torques, and DEWALT publishes four modes with neither. The published Dong Cheng page says why it matters: the figures are "what makes a selector usable".
