OBDLINK OBDLink CX review

The adapter built for coding and safe to leave plugged in: Bluetooth 5.1, an advanced sleep mode, overvoltage protection, and its own app included rather than sold separately.

The last word The adapter you buy once. Two of its stated features exist so it can stay plugged in.

What lands on the bench

A Bluetooth 5.1 interface with the maker’s own diagnostic app included, built and recommended for BimmerCode.

The two features that justify the price

Sleep mode, so the adapter can be left in a permanently powered socket without keeping the car awake. Overvoltage protection, so a jump start or a charger does not take it with it. Both are stated, and both address the two ways adapters actually die.

Why coding tools are judged on connection

A dropped packet while reading a code is an inconvenience. A dropped packet while writing to a control unit is the scenario every coding app puts a warning about, and it is what the maker means when it says the connection will not brick your ECU.

What still costs extra

BimmerCode. The included OBDLink app covers diagnostics and live data; the coding half is a separate purchase, as the listing states.

Availability

On sale at around $80 on the American Amazon store at the time of checking.

Prices and availability are what Keepa reported on the date this page was updated; both move.

What it does, and what it misses

Strengths

  • Its own app is included, so the tool works out of the box before any purchase
  • Sleep mode and overvoltage protection are both stated — the two things that decide whether an adapter can live in the socket
  • A connection the maker describes as rock solid, which on a coding adapter is the specification that matters most

Compromises

  • The most expensive adapter here by a distance
  • BimmerCode itself is still a separate purchase
  • Overkill for someone who only wants to read an engine code

The questions that reach us

Why does connection stability matter so much?

Reading a code is harmless if it fails halfway. Writing a coding change is not, and every coding app warns about it. That is what this adapter is sold on, and what the maker means by avoiding data corruption and dropped packets.

Is the included app enough on its own?

For diagnostics, yes — live parameters, fault codes, clearing. Coding is what BimmerCode does, and that remains a separate app and a separate purchase.
